No capture outside the attentional window

چکیده
A recent study has proposed that attentional window determines when the color singletons capture visual attention (Belopolsky, Zwaan, Theeuwes, & Kramer, 2007). The present study used the additional singleton paradigm of Theeuwes (1992) and showed that capture was abolished when the size of the attentional window was reduced by focusing on RSVP stream in the center of the screen. Narrowing of attentional window also resulted in increase in search slope even in such a simple task as the pop-out detection. These findings suggest that attentional window plays a crucial role in visual selection and in the occurrence of attentional capture.

Perceptual grouping allows for attention to cover noncontiguous locations and suppress capture from nearby locations.
A salient stimulus may interrupt visual search because of attentional capture. It has been shown that attentional capture occurs with a wide, but not with a small attentional window. We tested the hypothesis that capture depends more strongly on the shape of the attentional window than on its size. Search elements were arranged in two nested rings. The ring containing the search target remained...

متن کاملThe size of an attentional window modulates attentional capture by color singletons.
Researchers have proposed that during visual search, a color singleton cannot capture attention in a bottom-up fashion (Jonides & Yantis, 1988). In the present study, we manipulated the size of the attentional window by asking participants to detect either a global (diffuse attention) or a local (focused attention) shape before starting the search for a nonsingleton target. We demonstrate that ...
متن کاملAttentional Window Set by Expected Relevance of Environmental Signals
The existence of an attentional window--a limited region in visual space at which attention is directed--has been invoked to explain why sudden visual onsets may or may not capture overt or covert attention. Here, we test the hypothesis that observers voluntarily control the size of this attentional window to regulate whether or not environmental signals can capture attention. We have used a no...
